Nutrition Matters
Nutrition is the basis to ensuring your dog's health.
There are hundreds of brands of dog food available, in a variety of formats:
extruded dry, pelleted dry, flaked dry, dehydrated, sausage-roll style, can stew, loaf, slices in gravy, and more. Not all brands are equal.
Wellness
When determining the best food possible for your dog, you need to consider critical
factors such as breed pre-conditions, life stage, special dietary restrictions or
requirements, taste preferences - and now, even preventative care nutrition,
intentionally seeking specific functional ingredients to benefit whole health.
Dogs are, regrettably, prone to hundreds of diseases. It is estimated dogs
are susceptible to over 350 defined diseases.
By knowing the causes and factors of these ailments, you can make an informed
decision on the supporting nutrition your dog needs and deserves.
Common Ailments
Skin and/or Coat Irritation
Of course dogs itch and scratch - but only to a point. Exceeding the occasional relief
scratch may indicate a serious irritant to your dog's skin. To promote skin and coat health we include Omega 6 and 3 fatty acids in optimal
balance. Our natural fatty acid sources include Sunflower Oil, Menhaden Fish, whole flaxseed, and several other natural fatty acid sources.
Digestive Upsets and Gas
Dogs tend to consume large amounts of bacteria, between drinking out of suspect water sources,
licking everything, themselves included, and even eating garbage.
In most cases, this bacteria is destroyed by stomach acids or regular
immune systems. To help canine's overcome a natural inclination to bacteria,
we add probiotics, the `friendly' bacteria that aid in digestion and promote
normal bowel health. Probiotics can be damaged by heat, so we spray our kibble
with five natural probiotics after it has been cooked and cooled.
Plus, of course, we feature whole grains, fresh whole fruits and vegetables to
supply the right balance of both soluble and insoluble fiber to promote proper colon
health and function, and help lower cholesterol levels. We even add yucca to
help reduce fecal odor.
Allergies
Allergies can be caused by both internal (eg. food) or external (eg. flea bites) factors.
Food allergies are usually the result of the dog's immune system becoming sensitized to a particular food ingredient compound (generally a protein)
after having consumed it for a long period of time.
It can be a laborious task trying various formulations to identify an offending ingredient.
For many dogs, lamb remains an allergen-free ingredient, so we developed this as a special
single-meat protein formulation: Performatrin Ultra Lamb and Brown Rice.
There's no wheat, corn, or chicken, which are suspected to cause allergies and reactions for some dogs. At the same time, our balance of Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids promotes healthy skin and coat.
Cancer
Free radicals are by-products of normal energy production (metabolism) and the ingestion/inhalation of environmental pollutants.
These charged particles attack the body's cells. Unnaturally high levels
of free radicals can accelerate damage leading to serious conditions like arthritis,
and possibly even cancer. The naturally occurring antioxidants in the whole fruits,
